There are few farms who can boast having 3 active generations invovled in the farming, and Groote Post near Darling is one of them. Old man Peter (after whom the Old Mans Blend is named), son Nick and his son Peter Pentz were due to present their story at the Woordfees on Tuesday 11 October at the 'Drie Generasies Proe Tesame' event. But sadly the older Peter was not well so we had only 2 generations, but what a wonderful bond and conversation we had with these two passionate men.
Young Peter studied marketing at Potchefstroom and joined the farm on the day that the alcohol ban was instituted for lockdown in March 2020. What a time to start a wine marketing job! But this did not deter the energetic Peter, who took to digital marketing like a proverbial duck to water and soon enough their online shop was up and running and he started engaging in his inimitable way with their audience around South Africa.
Two years down the line and he is doing things a little differently, collaborating with Veldskoen for their classic vellies as well as their plakkies, which they had made to assist with marketing their delicious minerally Groote Post Seasalter Sauvignon Blanc, our new favourite white wine! The wine is so named after a town in the UK which Nick visited and was struck by the name and his vision of the wine and its label has been incredibly effectively realised in its fresh white and blue label.
For a farm which started as a dairy farm selling milk, the Pentz family have really embraced innovation, without losing their heritage and family history. A tough balance which they seem to have achieved effortlessly.
